Imagine that you are looking out the window, dreaming of something you’ve wished for a long time. Maybe it’s to get that promotion you know that you deserve, maybe it’s to get that fit body that you’ve been thinking about for a long time or maybe it’s to finally write that book that you’ve outlined in your head so many times. You love dreaming about the moment your boss finally says those magic words, about the moment you feel how tight and well-trained your body feels, the moment that you are browsing through your own book with a smile on your face.

So why haven’t you already got that promotion? Why aren’t you already wandering around with a fit body or have written the book that you know you have in you? Could it be as easy as Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said, that “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”?

Why set goals?

Because if you reach them, you’ve won your own game by following your own rules. You’ve finally got your wishes, you’ve finally fulfilled your dreams. Because, you see? Your wishes can come true if you turn them into goals. The most valuable goals usually come from within, from your own wishes.

I think there are lots of reasons why one should set goals. One of the most important is that if you set a goal, you are making it a priority. Look at goals as a road map. You are planing your goal, you are following every little step that you are taking towards the results that you want to achieve. And when you’ve achieved it, you’re finally going to walk around with a smile on your face, knowing you already have got the promotion, that you already walk around in your dream body, that you already have written your book that you’ve always wanted to.

I used to dream a lot when I was younger. I used to dream I was a writer, I used to dream I had my black belt in a martial arts and that I had a fit body. Then I discovered goal setting and now, I am a writer (see my books here; they are still more to come). I also have a black belt in taekwondo, which I took as an adult, at the age of 36 after six years of intensive training. About that fit body, let’s talk about it another time, I’m still working on that ;)

You should take your goals seriously. Without goals, you won’t have a road map to your own life. It’s like Lewis Carroll said in Alice in Wonderland: “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.”

Don’t just take any road, take your own road. Take the road that will lead you to your dreams. That road is only possible if you turn your dreams into goals.

My reason for setting goals is that without goals, I would still be wishing for things to happen. Now I take control, and I love it.
